The Founder
Milestones Communications was founded in 2005 by Gwen Fariss Newman, who brings 10 years experience as a print journalist with two metropolitan dailies and another 10 as a PR professional specializing in publications, website development and media relations. She has won national awards both for writing and for the creation of new communications vehicles. She spent four years handling media relations for the Maryland Science Center and the University of Maryland Medical Center where she concentrated on cancer care, diabetes, women’s health and sports medicine.
She also spent five years at the Institute of Human Virology where she oversaw the production of more than 200 pages of copy annually and revamped its website (content, navigation and traffic-building initiatives) to see a 10-fold increase in visitors to the site. Gwen relishes the opportunity to undertake new initiatives and/or to improve upon existing products, but most importantly loves helping organizations better understand their needs and creating communications to help them meet their goals.

The founder of Milestones Communications is a longtime recreational runner . Having finished six marathons – including Boston - she pounds the pavement mile after mile and has experienced firsthand the benefits of long-range planning in order to meet a long-term goal. The reality remains that each and every step will have its own unique contributions and effect. As a scrapbook enthusiast, she preserves with paper and pictures key milestone events as well as everyday moments and has learned that picture is indeed worth a thousand words. It is the combination of written and visual, however, that will make lasting memories and become a cherished keepsake. She chose the Milestones name in honor of the lessons learned from her two favorite pastimes and their application to the business world.
Positioned above the Milestones name, the artistic “M” with upraised ends brings to mind the image of a bird in flight, soaring, celebrating success. With wings uplifted, it communicates a certain energy to chart its own course, to do so with confidence and clarity and with an openness to the promise that the future holds. Milestones is committed to helping others express themselves with such eloquence, style and self-assurance.
